Miri To Be Third Gas Hub: Premier
MIRI, Thurs: Miri would be developed into another strategic gas hub as part of the State-wide Sarawak Gas Roadmap, Sarawak’s Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Haji Johari Tun Abang Haji Openg said here today.
The gas pipeline from Bintulu would be connected to Miri to run a RM2 billion 400 MW combined cycle gas turbine power plant that would be developed by Petros, the State-owned oil and gas company, he said.
The capability of Miri to generate affordable and reliable power would be a pull factor to attract investors, he told reporters during a press conference at the end of his visit to Miri Port.
Earlier, in the morning the Premier chaired the second State Development Coordination Committee meeting with special focus on development in Miri Division.
He said in a review of the overall development of Miri, the city would be turned into the third gas hub besides Bintulu and Samalaju that would eventually see the gas pipeline being extended to Kuching.
The Premier, who earlier along with other State government leaders took a river cruise from the Miri Port Crew Change Terminal at Pulau Melayu here said as part of the review Miri Port at Kuala Baram would be expanded to include a harbour, warehouses, industrial, commercial and residential areas.
Following the models of the ports of Shanghai and Adelaide the Baram river mouth would be deepened and a new channel developed to allow vessels with draught of four to seven meters to pass through.
The State Government had approved an allocation of RM238 million to dredge and deepen the river mouth, he added.
Earlier, upon arrival at the facility the Premier and his entourage was briefed by the chair of Miri Port General Manager, Serawa Budol on the present and future development of the port.
Deputy Premiers, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who is also the Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development and Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan were among those accompanying the Premier.
